New Years Update.
3 months ago – Thu, Jan 18, 2024 at 10:24:27 PM

Hey folks, I hope the holiday period was nice to everyone.

I said last year that I would hopefully get the ball rolling by January for the sprucing up of the books. Unfortunately, we’re not there. In both November and January, I sat down to work through how the books were going to be reorganised, edited, designed, who to reach out to, what help was offered, etc, etc… and it honestly came to little. I think between creating my own products to keep myself afloat, and looking after a dragon-slaying princess who is about to turn 1, I haven’t had the real time or mental ability, to invest into this what’s needed, to create what I envisioned in my head.

So where does that leave us. Not completely awash, just not exactly where we were swimming towards. The restructured plan is thus:

1.      Pull the NPCs from both books to create a third. The last poll indicated a preference towards this, and I think it's a better choice for the printing side of things.

2.      I will, myself, be doing a quick design for Magnificent Mounts & Traveling NPCs. With the hope for it to end up looking in line with the current Terrific Terrains.

3.      There won’t be additional editing work completed. When I look at the document to be edited, it’s 350 pages without art, and over 250,000 words. Its just too much to realistically ask people to work on unpaid. And I cannot seem to plan any sort of timeframe that wouldn’t take years to complete. Putting strict deadlines on volunteers is a no-go and there is no money.

4.      Hopefully in the next 1-3 months, all three books will be sorted and sent to P.OD. We can speak more on costs and logistics of it all once its uploaded and ready to go.

I’m really sorry to add more disappointment to what has been a long few years for this project. And while something is better than nothing, and we will get three completed books, I came in swinging with bigger plans and ideals (and many lovely folks offering to help) and it won't be coming together fully. The more I’ve sat sown and actually parsed things out, the more I’ve realised it wasn’t going to happen with no money to go into it.

TLDR: There shall hopefully be three shiny books ready for people to download and grab physically in the next few months, however, the additional editing and design improvements that were planned won’t be coming. Its too large of a process for something with no money, and i want to get the books into your hands. Semi-decent is better than nothing.

NPCs and creating 3 Books: Poll – COME VOTE!
6 months ago – Thu, Oct 19, 2023 at 07:23:27 PM

Hey folks,

Hope all is well.

As mentioned in the last update, the initial look-over of Magnificent Mounts came with a horde of NPCs, 108 unedited pages to be precise. This, combined with the 91 edited pages within Terrific Terrains, gives us a dash under 200 pages of NPCS. A lot.

Which brings me to the crux of this update.

Do we split this series of books into 3?

The Pros - Usage

  • It will place all the NPCs together, making them more easily used in bulk.
  • It will lower the page counts. The books are monsters, 500 (Terrains designed) + 350 (Mounts raw, so likely 400+ designed). Anyone that’s held a 400+ page book, especially one printed via DTRPG, knows that they are bloody massive, and the binding glue won’t hold significant usage.

The Cons - Cost

  • It will always cost more to make and print multiple books. I have not looked into this too thoroughly, but educated guesses would be something like - $80 (40x2) + $15 shipping, & $95 (35x2 + 25) + $20 shipping. So, something like $95 vs $115. While it may not be a crazy difference, as people are (in reality) buying the books a second time, every dollar counts.

I want to leave this again in the hands of the community to decide, so I’ve created a StrawPoll that we will watch for the next few weeks. Come vote, leave comments here, and we can settle on an outcome before everyone dives into creating Magnificent Mounts properly.

Magnificent Mounts & Where They Go - Please Read/Vote!
8 months ago – Sun, Aug 27, 2023 at 04:10:10 AM

Hello good people!

I'm sorry to spam you all with another update, but I've had some amazing news come in, and it potentially changes some things. This morning i woke up to Hobie having granting me access to the Magnificent Mounts drive.

I haven't fully gone through the documents fully, but it looks like a vast amount of the writing is there.

You are getting a second book!

This, however, brings about some extra questions and problems to face.

  • 1. Unlike Terrains, which had a large chunk of the writing edited and reviewed, i don't believe any of Mounts has been looked at since initial creation.
  • 2. If this book is to be edited, should the parts of Terrains that didn't get a full edit, also receive a proper edit.
  • 3. Some art/text/referencing from Terrains actually belongs in Mounts. Should it be changed to more align with what was originally intended.
  • 4. As this book will be starting from scratch, should i bring in others to help. I chose not to in the previous book for a number of reasons, however, that logic holds up less in this scenario.

The answer to these really boils down to the question of, do i bring others in to help the project? An act that will delay the creation, though bring about a better end-result. Or do i push ahead and do it myself, creating a workable and (at least in my opinion) acceptable book, in a quicker fashion.

When i worked through Terrains, and i had no idea how things would pan out, i made this choice myself. A number of kind and generous people have offered there skills and services, and this time round, i don't want to say no on my own.

SO, I'm putting it to vote.

https://strawpoll.com/LVyK8ro1On0

There are three options here.

  • The quick: I do it myself.
  • The medium paced: I get others to help. But just Mounts.
  • The slowest: I get others to help, and fix up Terrains while we are at it.

The third option, of course, will delay the P.O.D codes of Terrains. And while i imagine many people will be happy to wait, i don't want to make that choice for the collective.

I'm going to give the poll 2 weeks to get a proper gauge. Depending on the outcome, and the general response to this all, we can go from there.

For anyone that thinks they can help, be it as an editor or designer, please reach out. Either here, via email ([email protected]) or via discord (daniel.blp). Many of you already have, and I'll be going through past messages where i can, but a fresh nudge would help.

Sorry again for the spam, i hope the good news makes up for it!

Cheers,

 - Daniel

PS. Hey look my project is still going!
